Death From Above

A man has been terrified of power lines since he was a child. Because of his phobia, he rarely leaves the house. One crisp winter’s day he wakes up at precisely 8;00 A.M. and goes to put his cereal into a bright red bowl. After close inspection of his refrigerator, he realizes that he is out of milk. He looks tenuously from his bowl to a hanging power line outside his window and exhales sharply with a slight grimace on his face. He knows that he will soon have to make the trip to the supermarket. He walks on the sidewalk looking suspiciously at the power lines overhead. His fear is juxtaposed by the happy frolicking birds that are balancing perfectly on the thin wires. The air is stingingly cold but the sun still shines behind the clouds as some of the winter ice begins to melt. As he crosses the street to approach the store, he hears a cracking sound and looks overhead as a wire snaps and scrapes the ground before his feet, barely missing him. He heaves a huge sigh of relief and makes his way into the store. As he walks under the awning an icicle falls on his head and he dies, never having known that he had chosen the wrong subject for his intense phobia.
